It is a fairly solid notebook with decent hinges for the screen. There is some flex but nothing alarming.

Only a hard press on the rear of the screen will cause ripples to appear. I like the slot-loading dvd burner which looks sleek and avoids potential damage. Processor and Performance / Benchmarks: Just what can be expected from Intel’s advanced new Centrino Duo chip? It has twice as many cores, so is it twice as fast? Sometimes, but usually the benefit is smaller. However, while most benchmarks won’t show a twofold increase in speed, heavy multi-taskers will immediately notice a significant boost in overall system responsiveness. Tasks that would normally cause a major slowdown on a single core machine (like running super-pi or rendering a video) seem as if they’re not even running, because the computer is ready and available for your other input on another program. For a single program to take advantage of two processor cores, it has to be specially programmed. More and more software is being written this way, and for now at least most high end software that is likely to make you wait in the first place is.

Video and Photo software is often “multi=processor aware.” Being a photographer, I spend many hours using Adobe Photoshop. While I believe even older computers are more than fast enough for most tasks, it will be a long time before Photoshop’s need for speed is satisfied. Why wait 60 seconds when you can wait 1? I compared the Acer 5670 to my Dell 9300 in common Photoshop tasks real photographers do, not wacky filters that might make an Apple seem super fast. The Acer’s clock speed is only about 4% faster than the Dell, so I thought it was a fair indication of the performance gains possible with a dual core CPU. Both machines had 1GB of ram, and the Dell has a faster hard drive (7200 RPM vs.

5400 RPM) While the tests are not all inclusive, it represents some of the things I am commonly waiting on the computer for, and illustrates the potential performance gains dual core CPUs offer. At least with Photoshop, the performance is scaling almost linearly with clock speed and number of cores! Less commonly used filters are not multi-processor aware and may not show as significant a boost. I ran the popular Super Pi benchmark once by itself and got a result of 1m 22s.

It is all about it's settings. It's unbelievable, but that thing has many controls of a real camera (shutter speed, sensitivity, sharpness, white balance), combined with standard computer adjustment as brightness, contrast or gamma.

The Low Light Boost is simply slowing down the webcam because it forces it to the slowest possible shutter speed - 1/3s so the refresh rate of the cam can't be more than 3Hz! Just go into settings and driver settings and with standard photo knowledge, you can get bright picture without any lag. (turn off the Auto Gain Control, set speed at least 1/20, boost the gain and gamma and adjust sharpness, brightness and contrast as you like; auto white balance works just perfect). In low light you get quite a much of noise with acceptably visible picture, but in such condition at given sutter speed and without flash wouldn't even DSLR do any better. It is still just a (poor) camera (no Star Trek gadget) = it needs plenty of light!

(C) You can use the software with our Acer OrbiCam, this allows you to do much more with the camera, you can adjust blurryness and much more.

Reformat Your Acer Aspire AS5672WLMi-ATI booting from Windows XP Pro cd or home, Pro recomended, and install windows. I like to use the windows partition maker before I install windows to make a 20 gig partition for windows the rest for games and apps and stuff. This is your choice.

Startup/Msconfig​ Different things work for different people. Best bet is to go through your MSConfig, make a list of all the things that run on startup and then google each one (ie, type in 'qttask.exe') and see if its safe to remove, or if its something you personally would use. Some stuff you may well want to keep. Vista RC1​ I am happy to say that Vista RC1 runs very well on this laptop, besides small driver issues it is going to work out great. I played around with it for a while and found beta drivers for my sound and video and Vista installed my wifi and other stuff. It looks pretty sweet and will definitely take some getting used to, and the voice recognition software is really cool.

Vista,when released, should be a lot of fun on this laptop and I am looking forward to playing with it. Oh ya, and Vista gave me a 3.2 for performance, which I still don't really understand. Bluetooth Mice and Headphones​ Problem I'm sure alot of 5672 users have experienced several problems with BT devices, namely mice and headphones. The most common issues with BT mice are connection drops and lag issues. As for BT headphones, well they simply don't work.

The problem is not your hardware, it is your software. Now I won't pretend to be an expert on the subject, which is why I highly recommend you read up on it here. In a nutshell, the microsoft stacks on your 5672 are crap. Several BT services are buggy or simply do not work with this stack.

Solution Obviously, you need to install another stack. The stack you want is called WIDCOMM. Now there are many versions of WIDCOMM stacks out there.

I would recommend going with the most recent (atm, v5.1.0.XXXX). First, it's A2DP compatible, which means it supports BT headphones. Second, they work great with BT mice. I currently have 5.1.0.1100 installed on my 5672 and I can confirm my Logitech V270 mouse and BlueAnt X5 headphone are working flawlessly, no connection drops, no lag. You may also try the 5.1.0.1700 and 5.1.0.2100 versions, which will probably work too. Before continuing make sure to uninstall any BT mouse software you may have installed. For example, you must remove SetPoint for Logitech mice.

Also, you must manually remove the Microsoft bluetooth stacks in your device manager under Bluetooth Devices. I believe there is a tutorial somewhere in the GMS-Forum.

If someone finds it, please let me know. The WIDCOMM stacks are available @ GMS-Forum. Here is a link to the 5.1.0.1100 stack I am currently using: Widcomm.Bluetooth.Software.Drivers.5.1.0.1100. If you're having problems installing these stacks, check out the replies in release threads, you should find some solutions there. Conflicts Now there are a few drawbacks to these WIDCOMM stacks. One issue I found is incompatibility with ActiveSync.

ActiveSync is a Microsoft program which allows you to sync your PDA via Windows. It also offers users to sync via bluetooth, which is an awesome feature for the 5672 As you may have guessed, ActiveSync isn't too happy when you remove the Microsoft stack.

To get your PDA syncing with WIDCOMM, you need to make a few ajustments. After weeks of searching, I found this excellent post by benots4 over at aximsite. You can find his foolproof step-by-step guide here: ActiveSync over Bluetooth.

One more small note: Do not install the Logitech SetPoint software with the WICOMM stacks. I haven't been able to get SetPoint working with these WIDCOMM stacks. If anyone finds a solution, please let me know. Well I think that about covers it. This is by no means a complete guide, so if you have any specific questions or issues, you can PM me or post in the forums mentionned above. Just don't post in this thread.

Vista 32bit Build 6000 Final​ I have been testing out Vista and here is what I got so far: Here is the deal, ok so bluetooth, wifi, and the ethernet drivers auto install with Vista and work great. The ATI beta drivers work great but may cause you computer to go blank at login and I tested it, it is the drivers not the software.

So in order to fix that you just need to set up so you dont have to enter a password or press the standy by button let it go to sleep then wake it up and bamo! You can log back in. SO far Vista has been running great and very stable, I have been able to play all of my Steam games witout any issues, and they have been running even better than XP. UPDATE: The latest video drivers fix the login problem! Drivers: CHIPSET: Intel Chipset VIDEO CARD: ATI x1600 Beta Drivers SOUNDCARD: REALTEK HD TOUCHPAD: Touchpad Drivers CARD READER 5 in 1 Card Reader ps. I may have forgotten things that I fixed so let me know if you have questions.

I found that using the Omega drivers I got a score of about 500 point higher on 3dMark05, I will see if I can find my save score sheets. With overclocking I got about 200 more, which isn’t a ton so I left it unoverclocked 'stock'. But the Omega drivers have worked great for me and I play a lot of games, and with results like 500 ish points, why not? They also come with programs to make overclocking and such easier, it doesn’t hurt to look into it. Good lord it takes 2 seconds and usually answers your question! I've been seeing more and more of this on the fourms lately. Now go read up on your question, sorry it came out harsh but this is not the place to ask this question! This thread should be a REFRENCES ONLY and not a 'oh I had a question about , what is it or how do I do it'. Just PLEASE do us the favor and googl it first!

Or even search it on the fourms, it saves us time and headaches. The more questions you ask here without searching thoe more ambigious and complex this thread will become and the harder to find and answer questions. I'm all for helping people witht their computer questions and that is why I (and everyone else) is here. Just think before you post and try to find it yourself! This removes the posts on double questions, and things that might be listed in the faq's already.

Sorry, I had already googled the topic and could not find out how it was related to the ACER 5672. Did find a lot of stuff on making customized Windows CDs, which seems to be what the slipstreaming is for, but I am not sure. Just wanted to understand the topic better. I am pretty sure that I am not the only one who would be confused by this as it was the only topic without a detailed explanation and moreso, because googling the topic seems to show no relationship to this notebook or others. Maybe I am just googling the wrong thing.
